When Walter wanted to step back from the police unit he trained me on the material, the PERC group, and the legal material. He was kindness itself, and that friendliness continues as I moved to other units. He truly loved his wife and children, and I think they kept him going. I will never forget him, and his kindness.

During my early years in the Dept. Of Civil Service, Walter was my supervisor and I got to see first hand what a profound intelligence he had but also a unique personality with a deep love of his family. During those years, he showed patience & support, answering my many questions - his answers particularly concerning statistics helped immensely on my first promotion exam.
I never tired of hearing about all six of his children and his wife who were obviously the center of his life. I am so sorry for your loss.
I will always remember Walter with fondness. He was a multi-dimensional, genuine person with a joy of living.

When I first started at the Department of Civil Service, Walter was the employee who so graciously took me around and introduced me to everyone. I remember this day like it was yesterday. Working in the public safety section had its own unique challenges, and Walter was always there to impart his knowledge on new examiners. When I was struggling with scoring certain exams, Walter immediately came over, sat with me, and took the time to explain everything. Walter was so smart - a genius really. He would always have a story to share about his family and I could tell how much he just absolutely adored his wife and kids. They were his true pride and joy. Walter brought so much character to the office. I would always joke with him about his endlessly dirty coffee cup and he would joke with me about my "striped" hair, referring to my highlights. I will always affectionately refer to Walter as "our Wally" because there will never be another Walter. He was truly one of a kind and he will be missed.

The second I turned on my computer in the office, Walter appeared out of thin air anxious to share the highlight of his previous evening with his family. Walter often talked about his children. He seemed to be attending sporting events multiple times a week and would beam with pride sharing how fast his daughter would run at the latest track meet. Walter also spoke about his fishing trips with his wife. Walter never ran out of stories and was pretty free with his words. I am smiling as I write this because the stories he would tell were one of a kind. Walter was also known for drinking a LOT of coffee and I could always tell when he filled up his mug - he would have a trail of spilled coffee that lead from the pot to his desk. And his desk.... littered with cheerios and a pair of shoes that he kept on the top shelf of his workstation. Walter will be missed and will always be remembered as a examiner in Testing Services Division.

Walter was definitely unique and had a strong presence at work. My condolences to the family. I have fond memories of the "morning chats" about metal music, family, politics, funny anecdotal stories, etc. Walter was brilliant and was always happy to impart his knowledge onto others. He taught me how to develop simulations and was always there to answer questions about statistics. He will be forever remembered.

Walter was one of a kind - generous with his knowledge. When I was new to Testing and overwhelmed with "jargon," Walter pulled up a chair and explained to me all of the secrets of the codes! He has been missed and will always be remembered with a smile.

My colleagues (in the public safety section) and I were deeply saddened when we heard of your loss. When I started working in the police unit, it was Wally who taught me how to make coffee for the PERC meetings (he had it down to a science), and he took the time to drive me to Cracker Barrel to show me where to meet the SME who reviewed our items. Even though he was known to be a super genius, he was also very down to earth and sweet. He made the rounds first thing every day to say good morning to the early birds, and sometimes he would launch into some sort of insanely funny story. He often spoke lovingly about his children and their accomplishments — usually academic or athletic — it was very endearing. He was always very genuine and very friendly. He was quotable too — if I was in a panic trying to find documents, Barb would always say, according to Walter, “everything is somewhere!” and sure enough I would eventually find what I needed! Walter was a truly unique character who will be remembered fondly by many at DCS.
With heartfelt sympathy,
Cherie Smullen
