Obituary of Harry K. Spindler
REXFORD –
Harry K. Spindler was born in Grand Marsh, WI to Harry O. and Mary Spindler.
He had three siblings: sister Eleanor and brothers James and Dean. He attended public schools in Wisconsin and upon graduation enlisted in the US Navy, where he served on active duty from 1946-1948. He was recalled due to the Korean War and served from 1950-1952.
Harry graduated from Hamline University, St. Paul, MN in 1953 and then received a Master’s degree in Public Administration from Syracuse University.
In 1954, he married Eunice Sheley of Alton, IL, and they moved to Madison, WI, where Harry had a variety of duties in Wisconsin State Government and the University of Wisconsin. They moved to Delmar, NY in 1967 when Harry joined the central administration of the State University of New York. He ultimately retired as Senior Vice Chancellor of the university system.
While at SUNY, Harry participated in many national and regional professional higher education activities. In Delmar, he and Eunice particularly cherished their active participation in Delmar Presbyterian Church. Here also their children, Laura, Brian, and Stan, grew up.
He also served 12 years as a trustee of TIAA-CREF, the nationwide provider of retirement programs for higher education.
In 1997, after retirement from SUNY, Eunice and Harry moved to Naples, FL. However, they spent every summer at their beloved home on Lake St. Catherine, VT. Eunice passed away February 2013 and Harry decided to return North, where all of his family were, and lived at Coburg Village in Rexford, NY.
