Obituary of Larry Erenberg
Town of Greenville, NY
Larry Erenberg died on August 4th 2013 after a long struggle with cancer. He had remained at home until the last couple of weeks. The family is grateful to the VA Medical Center in Albany for all the care and support they gave him and the family.
Larry was born in New York City in 1931, spent his school years in Brooklyn where his father and uncle had a tobacco store and soda fountain. He served in an active unit of the Air Force Reserves during the Korean War. After his service he returned to NYC.
In 1960 he married Renneé Hecht and with her had twins, Adam and Alix.
As "Mr. We" he designed and manufactured costume jewelry that was sold in boutiques all over the US. Pieces of his jewelry are still being exchanged on the web.
In 1970 with Angela, he discovered the Town of Olive and the Ashokan Reservoir and bought a weekend home in Boiceville. In 1972 their daughter Paula was born and Adam and Alix came to live with him. The family settled in the tiny house in Boiceville and started looking for somewhere larger to live. Through word of mouth they discovered the Country Inn in Krumville was for sale. They fell in love with the place immediately as they found it, grass waist high with the barroom, the barn, the pond, the waterfall and seven bedrooms. The economy and weekly commuting to NYC, caused the demise of the jewelry business. So after seeking advice from friends in the bar business Larry and Angela reopened the Country Inn in 1974.
Larry worked long hours, adapting to the needs of the community at the same time always exploring ways to make the tavern appealing to a broader clientele. He succeeded in drawing customers from all over the US as well as the rest of the world. From the famous to the neighbors Larry made everyone feel comfortable and respected. He was loved.
In 2003 he sold the home and business and spent the last ten years summering in Surprise, NY and wintering in Vieques, Puerto Rico where too he is sorely missed.
Remember Larry, a memorial event will take place at The Boiceville Inn, Route 28 in Boiceville NY on August 29th at 6 pm. Come share your stories from the almost thirty years he served the community from behind the bar at The Country Inn in Krumville.
