I first met Tom when we were young lawyers in Utica. We became good friends, and enjoyed many pints together here and there, but mostly at The Devereaux and later, The Columbia. I remember him meeting Barb for the first time and their whirlwind courtship. Also her great admiration for the JSC she clerked for. (Emoticon omitted)
Tom also invited me to join his senior league team at the New Hartford rink and we enjoyed some winning seasons together after his rugby career wound down.
My last memory of Tom was in the years before they closed Starr Rink. He was a fixture at every Colgate game. It must have been a long drive for him and his presence there was a testament to his love for Colgate Hockey. Great Guy. One of a kind. My sympathy to his family.

I am so sorry to learn of Tom's passing. He was a high school classmate of mine and my late husband's. He was a person of integrity and commitment to "doing it right" as long as we knew him. My sincere sympathy to his family

Tom and I were classmates at Albany Law School. Tom, his wife, Barbara, and I were pool clerks at the Appellate Division, Fourth Department in Rochester in the late 1970s, and Tom and I practiced bankruptcy law in the Northern District of New York. Tom was an exceptional lawyer and even a better person. He was truly a gentlemen in every sense of the word.
Barb and family- Those days we all shared in Rochester were special and are among my fondest memories. I will miss him.

Tom represented my wife and I about thirty years ago when we found ourselves in need of pursuing a claim against our health insurer. No other attorney would take the case, but Tom did. His intelligence and integrity carried the day. Over the years, he helped me again a few times and I had the opportunity to work with him on a few cases. Working with him either as a client or a consultant was always a pleasure. I've worked with a number of attorneys over the years but none of them measured up to the standard that he set for me. Going to miss just knowing that he was available to take my call and give me the guidance that I needed. Rest well, my friend.

I coached youth hockey with Tom and played hockey with him for many years in the New Hartford Senior league. He had more kindness, common sense and class than anyone. My condolences for your loss.

Tom was a man for all seasons. A distinguished attorney, a decorated soldier and a consummate family man. I was unaware of Tom’s struggle with Parkinson’s. He will be truly missed by the bankruptcy bar in upstate New York. Rest in peace Tom.

Tom Hughes was a consummate professional and a true gentleman. He was always ready to help a colleague and he often helped me in my practice. I struggled to keep up with him because he was a font of legal knowledge. We will miss him.
