Obituary of David M. Lewis, Sr.
GUILDERLAND –
David M. Lewis, Sr., age 75, passed away surrounded by his family on Tuesday August 29, 2023.
Dave was born February 22, 1948, to Richard and Grace (Manz) Lewis. He grew up in Schenectady, New York and graduated from Bishop Gibbons High School. In 1968 he married his wife Carol Handy, together they raised two beautiful children. Dave served as a Sergeant in the U.S. Army, stationed in Fort Hood, Texas from 1968 to1970. After returning home from service he trained under his brother Tommy and completed his cabinet maker apprenticeship. Dave enjoyed working in trades and moved his young family to Connecticut, where he was an electrician at General Dynamics Electric Boat Division in Groton, Connecticut. He retired from the company in 1997.
Dave lived life to the fullest through simple pleasures; hunting, fishing, home renovation and tinkering with cars. He enjoyed a good time, chatting with friends, and traveling. Many memorable vacations were spent around a campfire laughing and sharing adventures with family and friends. He could also be found napping on a beach as his nieces and nephews covered him in sand. Dave never met a stranger. He could converse with anyone, often letting the time get away from him to the cringe of his family waiting in the car. As a fan of NASCAR, NFL football and UCONN girls basketball you could find Dave yelling at the TV cheering on his favorite driver or team. He will be greatly missed by all who loved him.
Dave is predeceased by his parents, Richard and Grace Lewis; brother, R. Thomas Lewis and his beloved dogs. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, CarolAnn; daughter, Tina (Keith) Hayes; son, David (CJ) Lewis JR; granddaughter, Haley Hayes; sister, Nancy Heath; sisters in laws, Jude Lasher and Debbie Handy; brother in law Ray VanEpps; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Cremation has taken place through the care of Simple Choices, Inc.
Interment with Military Honors will take place at 12 Noon on Friday, September 22, 2023 at the Gerald B. H. Solomon - Saratoga National Cemetery, 200 Duell Road, Schuylerville, NY 12871. Please assemble at the cemetery by 11:45AM.
Friends and family are welcome to a gathering with refreshments immediately following at Woodlawn Sportsmen’s Club, 3367 E. Lydius St., Schenectady.
