Obituary of Paul E. Holman, Jr.
TROY –
Paul E. Holman, Jr., age 83, passed away peacefully on August 29, 2023.
Born, raised, and educated in Troy, he was the son of the late Paul Holman and Lillian King Oliver. He enlisted and served in the United States Navy, from 1958-1961, aboard the destroyer escort U.S.S. Hartley as well as the U.S.S. Pillsbury. Upon honorable discharge from the Navy, Paul worked at the Norton Company. He also attended Hudson Valley Community College where he earned a certification in Refrigeration and Heating. Paul owned and operated Holman’s Heating and Cooling and worked in this field until 2021.
Paul (Paulie to family and close friends) was an avid sportsman. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, boating, downhill skiing, and horse racing, at Saratoga. Paul was an instructor at the Arthur Murray Dance studio, where he met his cherished wife, Joan. He never passed up an opportunity to spend time with his family, whether it be at a party, get together or holiday, especially Thanksgiving with his “dear, sweet little nieces”. Paul was a voracious reader of books and the NY Post. He loved music, crossword puzzles, trivia, history, learning, debating politics, and animals, above all, his late dog, Missy.
Paul delighted in cooking and was not shy letting family and friends know that he made “The BEST” meatballs and sauce. He got a kick out of “busting chops” no matter the topic and his eyes twinkled when he hit his mark. Paulie often used this strategy during pinochle games with the family or any game for that matter. He was a kid at heart and had a laugh that was unmistakable. Paulie would do anything for his family and if you needed help, he would be there at the drop of a hat. This spicy and sweet chivalrous man will be missed by many, especially those who knew him best. No party will ever be the same without him.
Paul was predeceased by his beloved wife, Joan Holman, and brothers, James (Maria), Ronald, and Mark Holman, his sisters, Anne (Jerry) La Monte and Carolyn (David) Gifford and lifelong friend, John Mahar. He is survived by stepchildren Edward (Joan) Bishop and Barbara (Bob) Smollin, his sisters, Christine Holman, Cathy (Nicholas) Richichi, Nadene Oliver, and his brother Charles (Carrie) Holman, his many nieces/great nieces, nephews/great nephews, and his close friend, Tommy Ring.
