Obituary of Scott M. Hickey
ALBANY –
Scott M. Hickey passed away Saturday, December 9, 2023 at Collar City Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Troy, NY, after being rushed to St Peter's Hospital in Albany, NY, the day before Thanksgiving, then diagnosed with terminal cancer, and transferred to Collar City for palliative care.
Scott Hickey was born July 9, 1961, and raised in Albany, NY. He was the son of the late William B. Hickey Sr. and Louise M. (Becker) Hickey. Scott is survived by his siblings, William B. Hickey Jr. of Colonie, Cynthia Hickey of Albany and Lori Entezari and her husband Mehdi of Collegeville, PA, and by two aunts, Nauey E. Becker (aka Teena), and Bernadette Becker (aka Bernie), whom he was caregiver for over the last 14 years.
He is also survived by his neighbor and close friend, Carol Coogan, who regularly employed him with property care, snow removal and small repair jobs, referring to him fondly with humor as her "brother from another mother" or her "rent-a-hubby."
Scott is also remembered by his Aunt Bernadette’s friends Ray and Phyllis Cardona as caring, kind, easy-going, resourceful, helpful, loyal and loving especially to his Aunt Bernadette. They visited Bernie and Scott, assisted with doctor’s appointments, daily medications, some favorite meals and lots of banana bread, and got to know and love Scott as he cared for his aging Aunt with dignity and compassion.
Scott attended Colonie High School, then worked a variety of jobs throughout his life. He told many funny stories of his first job as part of "a crew of 13-14 years olds who had a blast selling Times Union newspaper subscriptions (13 weeks money back guarantee) door to door," the time he worked at a pet store, down at the port of Albany running machinery, for Temple Israel, and manual labor masonry, painting, heavy lifting and moving jobs. Sometimes this work involved trips to Florida, and he often reminisced about how much he enjoyed himself there.
Friends from his younger days remember him as "a great example of a good guy from West Albany who was happy-go-lucky, loved to play pool & foosball at the Golden Cue, liked the Jets & the Yankees, and have "a slice" at the "Pizza Nook."
In recent years, Scott was regularly seen riding his bike around the neighborhood. He was interested in collectibles, coins and antiques. He enjoyed finding metal scraps to take to the junkyard to turn into cash, and rescuing still useful items from the trash and putting them to good use.
Scott loved to laugh and to make people smile. He will be remembered for his great sense of humor, his devotion to caring for his elderly aunt and kindness to his neighbors, and for his simple, humble nature.
