Just learned of Jim's passing from Fr. John Kirwin. Jim was someone who set such a wonderful Christian example who always stood up for the poor and for social justice. My wife Kate and I knew him in those advocacy efforts many years ago.

Jim was always a role model for me. I was a conscientious objector during the Vietnam War. Jim wrote a letter to my draft board explaining how a Catholic could be a CO based upon his religious beliefs. When I became a CO I had to do "alternate service" and Jim, as a board members of CALCAV, recommended hiring me to be the director of the Schenectady Area Peace Center. My draft board did not approve of that, but they eventually gave in. I also knew Jim through CLOJ - I volunteered and did court monitoring and eventually did "Thresholds" counseling in the county jail. Jim has always been an inspiration to me. He knew my strengths and weaknesses and when I had made mistakes in life, he accepted me for who I am. He married a wonderful woman who taught my stepchildren in the Open School. Jim's actions in life spoke louder that 1000 inspirational sermons. Jim has always been an inspirational speaker, and he not only talked the talk, he walked the walk. With loving memories, Vic Martini

As a young boy at St. Columba's School (as well as an alter boy at the church) I always knew him as "Father Murphy". And it wasn't until I became a teenage, raised by a single mother, that Father Murphy became my mentor. Especially, during the time when Father Murphy and I, along with my good friend - Peter Veilkind - found ourselves exploring the New England States. Via a two week bicycle trip to Belfast Maine. Only to be followed up the next year with another two week exploration. But this time it was a trip across country in his tiny Subaru wagon. And it was here during these trips that I was memorized by Father Murphy's amazing ability to easily make friends along these trips. So much so that we were constantly being invited into people's homes for a barbecue or dinner. And then I watched his intellect go to work as he was able to engage in any subject with anybody. And then of course there was his roaring laugh. I so admired the man... spoke about him numerous times to others... and never have forgotten about him.

I knew Jim when he was a priest and advocate for social justice. He was outspoken, intelligent and a very smart person. He had a profound sense of humor. He loved challenging people about their beliefs. But most of all he was a person who followed his belief in God. I’ll never forget Jim Murphy.

I recall working for Jim way back in the 1960s. The project simplified his concern and care for others. It was too refurbish and make safe a children’s playground off Albany Ave. It was just a small example of how Jim dedicated his life to care and help for others, especially the disadvantaged. I met Jim at a community building workshop I hosted in the early 1990s. We remained friends over the years, and he performed the service when my husband and I were married in 1996. He was one of the most authentic human beings I have ever met and the world will be less beautiful without him in it. My deepest and most sincere condolences to his family. Their loss is incomprehensible.

Jim and I pounded the asphalt together when we were both running for office. He was a great teacher. One Saturday morning we knocked on a door in Yates Village the public housing project in the North end of the city. It was answered by a young woman and a bunch of kids. It was immediately apparent that she richly deserved all the social services she could get. Jim dealt with her with amazing kindness and understanding. I stood silent. Across the dark room a large color TV shown brightly. Those things were really expensive back then. The sound was off. As we walked away I wondered out loud how a person with such needs could justify buying a color TV. Jim stopped and took my arm saying that if he was in her place the very first thing he would buy would be a color TV. The fact that I had totally missed it makes me sad to this day. Teaching a young man how to care is a rare skill. Thanks Father Jim.

Our memories of Jim extend back over 50 years when "Father Jim" was running for a seat on the county board. Our daughter went door to door in her Dad's back carrier in support of his candidacy! We knew him to be dedicated to make our community a better place to live. He will be missed by all who him.

Marilyn and I knew Jim well 1970-75. He was aa great supporter of our Catholic Worker community at Mt. Carmel House. He would lend Marilyn and me a room overnight in a house he owned on Summit Avenue for respite from the pressures of the House. And sometime during those years he won an orange Subaru at a church raffle in Scotia, probably St. Joseph's, which he let us use on the weekends because, or course, he was "otherwise occupied." He officiated at our 10th anniversary renewal of vows of Holy Matrimony in 1972. He stopped past the House regularly to spend time with both guests and workers. He used to say he could not tell them apart, a great compliment really. It was serendipitous when, some 15 years ago, he had a meeting here in Rochester, and he stopped past to say hello. We cherish every memory of him and only wish that we could have met and known Faye. Our deepest, our entire sympathy. Dennis Wienk dwienk@frontiernet.net
