Obituary of Mark John Sonzogni
RED HOOK –
Mark J. Sonzogni, 69, of Red Hook, NY passed away on August 9, 2024.
The son of the late Charles J. Sonzogni and Ann Marie Moore (Sonzogni), he was born as the second of five children on March 6, 1955 in Demarest, NJ. He attended New York Military Academy (NYMA), where he found lifelong friends who matched his unique sense of humor. His life was heavily influenced by his younger years at the Jersey shore. He shared his childhood love of sailing with his wife and daughter on his Sunfish sailboat and later by kayaking the Hudson River.
Mark was a talented glassblower and craftsman, owner formerly of Tundra Glassworks and most recently LuckyDog Repair and Renovation. His glass was featured in Henri Bendel, Metropolitan Home, House Beautiful Magazine, New York Magazine "Best Bets", and received the American Craft Museum Design Award. After retiring from glass blowing, Mark brought his creativity to custom home remodels in the tri-state area. In his free time, he enjoyed a “jack of all trades” role with the Ulster County SPCA, bringing an equal excitement to shelter maintenance, animal transit, and even the donut selection for his fellow volunteers. With everything he did, he always lived by the motto “do it once, do it right.”
Mark was an avid gardener and an innovative cook. He is remembered for his talent of creating a gourmet meal from a nearly empty refrigerator. He enjoyed the act of creation and took pride in turning discarded items into beautiful and practical art. His greatest joy was working with his daughter Paloma on renovating her home. Mark was her first call for home repair education, guidance, and a level perspective when projects felt overwhelming.
Survivors include his devoted wife of nearly 37 years, Joanne Singley, whom he married on August 29, 1987 in Red Hook, NY. He was the loving father of Paloma Caye Sonzogni.
Mark is also survived by siblings and their spouses: Kathy Sonzogni Kahn (Kenneth Kahn), Jayne Sonzogni Amos (Gary Amos), Judy Sonzogni Carlson (the late Scott Carlson), and Sandi Sonzogni Bjorkman (Alfred Bjorkman).
In addition to his father, Mark was predeceased by his brother-in-law Scott Carlson.
We would like to thank Dr. William Teubl for a lifetime of compassionate healthcare. The entire staff of nurses, social workers, and the musical therapist at Compassion Hospice were professional and caring during our stay; we felt we were part of an extended family. A very difficult time for our family was held in the love and kindness of the staff.
