Obituary of John A. Settanny

John A. Settanny ALBANY John A. Settanny, 86, of Albany died on May 25, 2016. Born in Troy, NY, he was the son of the late Anthony and Angeline (Milanse) Settanny. He was a graduate of Catholic Central High School and was active with their basketball and football teams. He graduated from Sienna College Pre-Med in 1950. John was an Army veteran serving during the Korean War. He graduated from the Medical Service Representative Institute in Roanoke, VA. Upon honorable discharge, he worked as a medical service representative for 40 years for A.H. Robbins (Wyeth) and was the recipient of that company's prestigious golden circle award. Mr. Settanny was an avid toast master, winning several speech contests and served as Area Governor of Toast Masters Club in Troy, NY. He was a member of the Latham Rotary Club in which time he helped with the formation of a Rotoract Club at Sienna College. He was the recipient of the Paul Harris Fellowship Award, Rotary International Most Prestigious Honor; he cherishes his many friendships with Rotarian members, Richard Hodge, was like a brother. He was the founder of Reepers, an organization of retired physicians, dentists, pharmacists, medical services representatives and nurses. Shirley Madsen was his unofficial vice president and best friend. His hobbies included golf, tennis, bridge and Saturday poker with his tennis pals. He loved his bridge partner Barbara Agius. Alice Sawyer, was his special sister-in-law and Marg Milanse was more of a sister than a cousin. Following retirement he was a volunteer at Samaritan Hospital, a volunteer instructor for AARP’s defensive driving course and tax preparation for seniors. He was an usher at Our Lady of the Assumption for over 30 years. Survivors include his wife, Marsha Thomas of Albany, a daughter Jeanne Settanny of Clifton Park, a stepson Elliott Thomas of Hollywood, California, two grandchildren; Victoria Toomajion and John Toomajion of Troy, two great-grandchildren; Julianna and Caleb Graiten and son-in-law Ed Toomajion of Troy. Several nieces and nephews also survive. He was predeceased by his wife, Margaret (Peggy) Austin Settanny, a son, Anthony Settanny, a daughter, Rosemary Toomajion, a granddaughter, Marsha Toomajion, two sisters; Rosemary Fazio of Troy, Virginia Andes of Albany, and a brother Ted Settanny of Chelmsford, Mass. Relatives and friends will be received from 5 – 7 p.m. on Friday (Today) May 27, at Our Lady of the Assumption Parish, 498 Watervliet Shaker Road, Latham. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 9 a.m. Saturday morning (May 28) at the church. Interment with military honors will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Troy.
