I would echo those praises of Dr. Fossner. I too was a Percussion student at (then) JCSC, 1975-1980. I learned much from him, whether under his baton in the Wind Ensemble, in Woodwind Methods class, or in any conversation with him on any subject, in or out of music. He was, indeed, quite a Renaissance man, and I am eternally grateful for the gifts of education that he and his colleagues in that musical faculty cadre at JCSC bestowed upon us. Because of this, I have loved, and will continue to love, the gift of music that humanity has been given. I do wish that I had told him in person, but I have no doubt that he now knows.

Dr. Fossner was my oboe teacher from the time I was 8 years old to 17. He taught me to appreciate music and the hard work it demands. He was such a large part of my childhood and I will always remember the time we spent together.

Sorry to hear about the passing of Dr. Fossner. I was a percussion student at NJCSU in the early 1980's. I had the pleasure of playing in the concert band that he directed and at first meeting was taken with his kindness, professionalism and musicianship. Dr. Fossner is a true example of a "gentleman". He will be missed.

Al was one of those kind, honest, persons I had the good fortune to know. I have fond memories of the first Jazz Ensemble he lead at NJCU where I graduated in 1969. I've had and still have a wonderfully rewarding career in music. Al's example of patience has always been a wonderful life lesson for me. I would see him from time to time in Closter, NJ which is next to Haworth, where Al lived. He'd be going to Columbia to teach, and he said, "at 90, I still love doing it!"

Dr Fossner was a truly dedicated and caring educator and musician. As undergraduates he guided both of us to successful teaching careers. That was 40 years ago and whenever he saw us he still had the same kind ways, making you feel that he was interested in how your life and career were progressing. I remember going to the Papermill Theatre and seeing his name listed as part of the pit. After the show he took time again to chat. Our last meeting was a few years ago when we all sang happy birthday to him at alumni day at NJCU. He was a Renaissance man who gave so much to so many. He will be greatly missed by his former students and fellow musicians. May you be playing in a glorious Symphony in heaven with your lovely wife. Rest in peace.

Dear Al was a loving companion to my cousin Eileen Cohen, and became a beloved member of our family. We will miss him, especially at Passover. He was a gentleman in an age when gentlemen are few and far between.
Love from Berni, Jeff, Lisa, Jack, Milner, Barbara, Paul, Elaine, Ian and Chesley.

My deepest sympathies on your dad's passing. I remember him well (your picture of him is great- that same smile and glint in his eyes that I remember). Although I was not one of his better students he was able to instill in me a love and appreciation of music that I still have these many decades later. And you obviously inherited his (and your mom's) genes when it comes to music.
May your memories of him keep him and your mom alive in your heart.
