Obituary of Douglas James Goodhue

Douglas “Doc” James Goodhue, born April 10, 1943, died peacefully due to complications from heart and kidney disease on June 2nd.  He was in the loving presence of his life partner, Diana Wilson, and daughters Dana Jacobson-Goodhue and Joya Goodhue. Doug was the second son of James and Margaret Goodhue of Long Island, NY. He was predeceased by both parents and his older brother, William Goodhue, of Campobello Island.  

He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Toronto with a focus on the History of Science and taught at the University of Regina from 1971-1976.  Doc was a favorite English and Photography teacher at the MacDuffie School in Springfield, MA from 1976-1982. Following his teaching career he began a photography business and worked at Mass Mutual Insurance. In his retirement he lived in Copake, NY where he enjoyed the local model train club. 

Doug was known for his voracious appetite for reading. He would often recite quotes like “to whom much is given, much is required,” “there by the grace of god go I” or “shagged out following a prolonged squawk.” He leaves three grandchildren: Elinor Jacobson-Goodhue, Ethan Jacobson-Goodhue, and Roslyn Hilbert. He will also be remembered by a large community of students and colleagues who were impacted and sculpted in part by his great wit.

Please join us for a celebration of his life on the lawn at Tanglewood on August 26th for the “finale,” a Canadian flag will be the landmark.
