We have not seen Mary for many years. I used to work for the NYSBA while Fred was there. That's where we met Mary. She was the most fun-loving and yet compassionate person and in years past, would think of her. Our condolences go to you, Fred, and to your family. Sincerely, Tom and Cheryl Wallingford

I love this woman. Who doesn't? She packed such a friendly punch and she was so tiny. The smile, the sense of humor, the friendly sarcasm, her concern for others... her love of family..her openess to new ideas...what's not to love? Every Mayday Mary used to called me for years to wish me a Happy May Day. This came from our days at OD Heck when we were harrassing Mary to get involved in a CSEA Union strike... Balancing the needs of the workers and the residents was her main concern and we had to try to convince her that we were not foolhardy or uncaring for the residents..I remeber her listening posture, her responses...hmmm I see hmmm. But what about...???? And so it went.. I think in the end she was very proud of our organizing efforts and wanted to celebrate a workers holiday in some way. She every Mayday.. I would get that call. I will miss that call and the woman who picked up that phone.

Mr. Hmiel and family: So sorry to learn of Mrs. Hmiel's passing. I still smile remembering her enthusiasm while all the children were gathered the times after school watching the World Series games. Peace be with you all.

Mary was someone that had a great influence on me a long time ago. I started working at O.D. Heck in the repite program in 1975 and not having any parent figure, she was both a great help in my personal life and a great mentor for my very first time working with developmentaly disabled people and their families. She was a friend, teacher and co-worker to me until her (2nd) retirement. As I haven't seen her since then, it's wonderful to her that happy face in the picture you posted. I was there when Fred had his stroke and when her forst grandchild was born, shared lived for a time I guess. But the most important things she taught me were how to deal respectfully and with kindness always, when dealing with the families we worked with. I am still working atO.D, Heck, in recreation and there are some families I'm sure and staff (fewer) that will remember Mary's wonderful gentle words and touch. You were lucky to have her as a mother, wife, grandmother, etc, etc. As everyone was lucky that knew and interacted with Mary for any length of time. My sincere condolences to you all. Ellen Snyder

All of the Schwarz children adopted Mary Hmiel as our "aunt" (along with Uncle Fred)in the early 1960s. I have nothing but wonderful memories of this kind, gentle and compassionate lady, who never failed to make me feel happy and upbeat whenever I was near her. Her cheerfulness and sense of humor were infectious, and I never experienced a moment when she did not make me feel welcome and special. Uncle Fred and five sons: My prayers are with you at this time. Although we will miss her, your beloved wife and mother, and our Aunt Mary is truly in a better place now. May God Bless her, and her memory.

With great thanks I have adopted Aunt Mary and Uncle Fred through my good friend Patti Swartz Lockart. Our common thread was NASCAR. Aunt Mary was so excited to tell me what the current news was from Steve and Shane keeping me up to date. We often would speak about the pending race or the results from the previous weekend. She was a tiny small woman with a GREAT BIG GIANT HEART. She always saw the brightness at the end of the road and the positive in life. She also expressed her positive thoughts on her continued treatments. Always a big quiet smile with a tender hug. I will cherish my thoughts and memories. Aunt Mary, Uncle Fred and you all are in our thoughts and prayers. Than you for sharing a truly remarkable woman and a fine young lady with us. May God bless Aunt Mary and all of you. She is no longer in pain and suffering.
Love, Michael & Cheryl XOXO
