Richard Jay Murphy, 74, passed away quietly on February 22, 2020.
Jay was the son of the late Walter J. and Mary E. (Loftus) Murphy. He is survived by his four children: Sarah Murphy (Scott) of Colorado, Megen Murphy of Albany, NY Laura Murphy of Florida, and Christopher Scott Murphy of Clifton Park, NY. Jay is also survived by siblings: R. Bruce Murphy (Harriet) of South Carolina, and Nancy Murphy of Maryland, and a cousin, Deborah Murphy Kotlarz (Vincent) of Massachusetts. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Joshua Murphy of Wyoming, Sophia Russell of Florida, Anthony Russell of Florida and a great grandson Oliver Murphy of Wyoming, as well as several nieces and nephews.
Jay was born in Worcester Massachusetts on August 1, 1945. He graduated Bishop Dennis J. O’Connell High School in Arlington, Virginia. He was the Valedictorian of the graduating class of 1963. He attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) and received his PHD in 1969 in Electrical Engineering. He then went on to co-found Macrodyne Inc. Jay, along with several others, are the holders of a U.S. Patent relating to a method and means for monitoring faults in an electric power system. He was an avid contributor both financially and as a volunteer to RPI, recently serving as President of the 50-year Alumni Club.
