I have fond memories of standing with Stephen on your property and feeling strengthened by his connection to the earth. He made me feel safe and stronger. He gave me courage with his quiet calm manner. I hope that you will hold on to the blessing that he was to all. I pray that you will have comfort in knowing that he will always be with you, in the breeze, with the trees and caves on your property and most of all within the hearts of all those who treasured him. Mary, I am with you always. May you gather the strength you need from all those who love you so deeply. Love, deb

Never knew the man but have just read his lengthy obituary in The Altamont Enterprise. What an admirable life he lived. Good for all in his orbit and the 500 acres he farmed and conservation generally. Condolences to the family and the many, many others who grieve his passing. I've not seen a single reference to God or a higher power and have wondered what or whether he was a believer in. Perhaps just The Golden Rule - the basic philosophy of seems to have been his guidepost.

I too heard about Steve's death from the Milne newsletter. I am so very sorry to hear this news and send my heartfelt sympathy to Mary and the family. I was lucky enough to have visited the Browns' homestead a few times because my older sister Klara was in Mary's class. Though so many years ago, those few visits left indelible memories - the welcome there was so palpable and heartfelt.
My deepest sympathies to all who knew and loved Steve.

I am so so sorry to hear of your loss. Steve was the most wonderful man. He always made me feel welcome at your home and he always had a sparkle in his eyes. He was one of the kindest and most generous people I have ever known, and I have so many wonderful memories of him. He is with Bart now...and that makes my heart a little happier. I'm sending my love to you all. You are in my heart.

I had the pleasure of chatting with Steve in the times I would visit your house back in 2003 and 2004. I really enjoyed listening to his insights on life and his work as a biologist. I caught up with him at an Old Songs concert not too long ago and I will miss seeing him there. Thinking of you and your family. All the best.

Dear Mary and Family -
I was so saddened to learn of your loss. You have our deepest sympathies. Clearly you are blessed by a large and supportive family and many years of happy memories. Although my wife, Ellen (we too were married in 1963), and I never had the pleasure of meeting Steve, I know that for you to have selected him as your husband, he must have been a truly remarkable man.

Dear Mary,
I read with sadness the news of your husband's sudden death in the Milne e-mail bulletin. I don't know whether you remember me, but I was a year ahead of you at Milne and always enjoyed your friendship while I was there. You and your brother,John, were friends and compatriot souls then. We had lost touch in the intervening years. My mother always thought you were one of the most beautiful people at Milne and I suspect that she felt that way because you were also a lady. and very gracious. Was there a Blood Bank connection? I seem to remember something about you or John and the Red Cross Blood Bank where she was a volunteer.
How very difficult to lose your husband. His obituary painted a picture of a very interesting and wonderful man. I hope you are surrounded by the love of friends and family in the days ahead and have lively memories to feast on in lonely times.
I have been a priest for a long time, and I have learned that at times like this, there are no words that can bring comfort with the same power as presence. I wish I were not so far away and I could express my sympathy in person.
My best to you and prayers for you and all of your family as you grieve this tremendous loss.
Love,
Stephanie Condon (Shoemaker)

There are no words adequate to celebrate the quiet grace and strength of this man who always moved with determination and unflappable confidence. Nothing seemed impossible when he took up the task. My heart goes out to Mary and the family and the many friends who mourn his loss.
