I met Robert in my first week at V.I. High School when I was a freshman and he was a sophomore. I was really in bad shape as my father at 56 years old had just been medically retired (Parkinson's disease) from his railroad executive job on a much reduced pension. Things were bleak and a way to afford college wasn't clear as I did not want to burden my parents. I thought of quitting V.I. as it was academically tough for a country "hick" like me. Bob encouraged me over the weeks to stick it out, work hard, and that the reputation of V.I. would open doors I could not imagine. He was right and saved the day for me. I received a full scholarship to Siena and we ended up there together. I always held him in esteem for his taking time and encouragement.
