I met Robert in my first week at V.I. High School when I was a freshman and he was a sophomore. I was really in bad shape as my father at 56 years old had just been medically retired (Parkinson's disease) from his railroad executive job on a much reduced pension. Things were bleak and a way to afford college wasn't clear as I did not want to burden my parents. I thought of quitting V.I. as it was academically tough for a country "hick" like me. Bob encouraged me over the weeks to stick it out, work hard, and that the reputation of V.I. would open doors I could not imagine. He was right and saved the day for me. I received a full scholarship to Siena and we ended up there together. I always held him in esteem for his taking time and encouragement. He lighted up my bleak world and I understand he did the same for many others. What better can be said of a man? God be with you my friend. George P. Bonville Class of 1957 Vincentian Institute H.S.

I am sorry to read of Bob's passing. I remember our time together in the VI Band. After we graduated, it was nice to visit with him at the reunions. He also made time to email us when one our classmate's passed. Rest in peace Bob. Vince Kozel

Condolences to the Champine family.. I spent 4 years with Bob in the V.I. band and got to know him as a friendly, pleasant guy with a great sense of humor. In later years I got to know him much better as he headed up our monthly V.I. luncheon meetings. He worked hard on finding the right spot for our meetings and if things didn't go right, he took it very personally. We spent a lot of time discussing our mutual love for Ireland and our trips there. I looked forward to seeing him every month because he always had something new to talk about or word of his travels.
May God and St. Patrick guide him on his way home.
Bob Wiltsie V.I. 56
